PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
LOOKING FOR SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS FOR PROMOTING LOCALLY GROWN FOOD IN URBAN COMMUNITIES
The project Digging Deep brings youths knowledge in the field of sustainable food production in urban areas and encourages sustainable development. It is an opportunity to include youths in society because it encourages their active cooperation and improves their employment possibilities, by gaining new informal knowledge and competences. The goal of the project is to form a joint urban garden in every country, set up a local gardening club, organise six workshops and create an educational manual together with youths from Italy, Ghana and China.
PROJECT ACTIVITIES:
CYCLE OF LOCAL TRAININGS WITH INTERNATIONAL COMPONENT
A local gardening club was created in every country. The Slovenian team under PiNA’s guidance has thus established an urban garden in Srmin in Koper, which was intended to revive the currently closed building site and turn it into a community garden. The goal of the project is, among others, to plant the maximum number of indigenous species as possible.
Together with setting up the garden, PiNA has organised a cycle of free educational workshops (creating seed bombs and green bombardment, the workshop of permaculture, building a dry wall and a vertical garden), the projection of the film Zelena utopija (Green Utopia, 2013) and a round table with the title Economic and Social Potential of Urban Gardens.
At the same time, the project encouraged youth mobility, giving 12 members of the local gardening club the opportunity to attend an international workshop of urban gardening in Palermo, Italy (April 2014) and Accra, Ghana (October 2014).
