PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
THE NEED OF THE EU FOR A NEW CIVIC INVOLVMENT CULTURE
The European elections in 2014 confirmed the trend of falling citizens’ participation. Clearly, elections are no longer the only or key mechanism of citizens’ participation. A new culture of civic involvement has to be developed, creating a space for citizens and authorities to become aware of the role of every individual and their need for each other. The project ROUND-TRIP wants to encourage citizens to take steps towards an active and effective role in the decision-making processes, and decision-makers and local authorities to provide more effective participation opportunities.
STRENGHTENING THE COOPERATION OF LOCALS AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES
The activities of the project are based on providing practical information about existing mechanisms for citizens’ participation, gathering information about existing mechanisms for citizens’ participation in partner municipalities and providing commendations for eventual amendments of existing participatory practices and mechanisms in the local environment. In addition, the project will open up space for the cooperation of municipalities and non-governmental organisations, concerning the development of innovative practices for encouraging citizens’ involvement in debates on EU topics. The final event of the project will be an international conference about active participation of citizens in community life.
